Hardware
All devices running Android version 5 and later are supported, the app is still available for Android 4 in the Play Store, but it’s an old version and it won’t be updated. On Amazon Store, only devices sold since 2017 are updated, for other devices an older version is still available.
The tablet is obviously the device that will allow you to best enjoy your books, you read twice as long on a tablet as on a phone. Samsung tablets are by far the most popular for reading, they are expensive but have a very good quality screen. Second place goes to Lenovo, their low-cost tablets offer the best value for money.
On phones, Samsung devices are also quite popular for reading. Xiaomi is also a very popular choice, they often offer wide screens.
Chromebooks are a cheap solution for reading on large screens, but generally they have screens with a lower pixel density. They can also allow you to connect an external screen such as a television. They provide a desktop and/or tablet experience depending on the model.
There are a lot of Chromebooks and it’s hard to choose. Acer, Asus and Lenovo offer good quality Chromebooks, if you don’t like Chromebooks, one device might change your mind, the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet.
Windows Subsystem for Android is only available on Windows 11 on recent computers that have certain hardware specifications. It requires:
- 8GB of RAM (16GB recommended).
- a solid-state drive (SSD).
- a supported processor (Intel Core i3 8th Generation, AMD Ryzen 3000, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8c, or above).
Buying a Samsung device will allow you, on some models, to use an external screen. It is not a question of mirroring main screen but of using a second screen in a different resolution and size. You can use a television, a computer screen and even a portable monitor, some even have touch functions supported. Please note, to use a 4K screen you will probably need to use the official Samsung USB-C cable. A bluetooth mouse or a usbc to hdmi adapter might be useful.
The application is not officially supported by Android TV, that means it will not appear in the Android TV Plays Store. Actually, many devices do not ship Android TV but a customized version of Android. Check this detail before purchasing a device. However, it is quite possible to install the application yourself on an Android TV, but it will not integrate into the home interface. You can use the remote control but the possibilities will be limited, use a mouse instead.
